Kai Security Fund
GG&C installs garden beds in the homes of those who struggle to afford to do this by themselves and provides ongoing support and mentorship.
The Manawatū Food Action Network will work in close collaboration with GG&C and the wider community to provide logistical support and facilitate the purchase and planting of fruit trees alongside the gardens. By supporting people through community gardens, in-home gardening, urban farming, and social enterprise whanau will be able to not only provide their own fresh healthy produce but grow extra for their neighbours.
75% of the funds needed for this project have been raised. However, a further $6k is required to enable this project and make a huge difference to our locals within suburb 4412. This will allow easier access to homegrown healthy food that can be shared with their whānau, and neighbours.
Outcomes from the Kai Security Fund
• 150 fruit trees will be planted in social housing sites.
• 40 new produce gardens will be built.
• 20 gardening mentoring sessions will be delivered.
• 20 new volunteers will be engaged in the process.
Making impact through the Kai Security Fund
The project has two equal and intertwined goals; to reduce negative environmental impacts and to increase social cohesion. Positive impacts will include:
• Community connectedness and cohesion through the ability and knowledge to share excess food with whanau and our neighbours.
• Mana enhancement as people gain more food sovereignty.
• Health outcomes will improve through better access to fresh, healthy kai.
• The sustainable and transferable value of learning to grow your own food thus reducing food bills and reliance on supermarkets.
• Locally produced food means less food miles and reduced emissions from transport and manufacturing
• Having fruit trees planted will increase carbon storage.
• Encouraging composting will reduce pressure on landfills.
